LOCAL ECONOMY
The local economy relies strongly on four integral facets; retail business, tourism, industry and agriculture.
Poultry, dairy and beef cattle production is an important
operation in this area. Soybeans, grain sorghum, rice, squash,
strawberries, table grapes, fruits and vegetables grown in
this area, help make up the agriculture income. Of the farm
crops, soybeans and rice occupy the most land and produce
the most revenue.
There were approximately 1,667 farming operations in White
County in 1997. Agriculture is a large employer of many White
County residents and is also a stimulant to the economy.
Tourism plays a role in the local economy. Visitations to the Greers Ferry Lake Recreational area, located approximately 50 miles northwest of Bald Knob, exceed five million annually.
